Tom's Tops 2: Abolish Stamp Duty for All?
Whats the point of Stamp Duty on property sales, it raises approximately £11.6billion a year for government. There are 1.1 million residential property sales per year. So given the average occupancy of a household of 2.5 people, the abolition of stamp duty on all properties would benefit 2.75 million people. Such move could boost mobility, simplifying the moves for those upsizing and downsizing, so households can have a property that is right for their needs
This would give a welcome lift to the housing market and increase economic activity as well as being fair
So the next government could do both: Abolish Stamp Duty and give back £11.6billion to 2.5 million people and align Capital gains tax with income tax rates and add £12 billion to government revenue, asking 400,000 people better off to pay more
